Description
RAMSGATE ST AUGUSTINE'S ROAD TR 3764 SE (South side) 18/363 West Cliff Lodge GV II House. Early C19, remodelled early C20. Stock brick, rendered on main elevations, with slate roof. Entrance front: 2 storeys, with plinth and cornice and stacks to left and to right. Projecting single storey irregular wings to right and projecting porch to left. Irregular fenestration of glazing bar sashes in rusticated surrounds, with round headed stair window in rusticated surround to right. Multi-panelled door to left in porch in hollow moulded surround. Multi-panelled and glazed door to centre with shell hood on entriched brackets. Garden front: 2 storeys, with plinth and pedestals to 1st floor Ionic pilasters on cornice, with frieze and cornice pedimented to left and to right. Parapet, balustraded to centre with egg and tongued cornice and ball finials, enriched, particularly with plaster panels of grazing horses. Four glazing bar sashes on ground floor with tented verandah on moulded square piers on moulded base wall with central steps. Conservatory and outbuildings to left. The house was originally built by a Mr. Benson and known as Royal Villa is shown on Collard & Hurst's 1822 map, later West Cliff Lodge, the residence of the Earl of Darnley, and yet another of the houses used by Princess Victoria in Ramsgate (see Busson, Ramsgate 109).
