CONVENT ROAD 1. 5283 (North Side) BROADSTAIRS King's Gate in grounds of Port Regis School TR 37 SE 6/82 II GV 2. Lord Holland built this archway on the shore to commemorate a landing of King Charles II and the Duke of York in 1683. Before this date Kingsgate had been known as St Bartholomew's Gate. Lady Holland was the great-grand daughter of Charles II. In 1819 the gateway was demolished by a gale but it was re-erected in the grounds of the Convent. Pointed arch of rough flints with a Latin inscription announcing that the name of Bartholomew's Gate should now be changed to King's Gate in honour of the landing there on 30 June 1683 of Charles II and James Duke of York. Stone eagle to the left side of the arch and shield to the other side. The seaward side has an inscription in metal in Saxon characters. "God bless Bath'lem's Gate", and 2 stone plaques, one on each side, each surmounted by a crown. The left side one has a Y, the right side one 2 Cs intertwined. These are supposed to refer to the Duke of York, King Charles II and Carolina, Lady Holland. Flint wall on either side of the archway.# All listed buildings in Port Regis School grounds form a group.
