ALBION STREET 1. 5283 (South East Side) BROADSTAIRS Royal Albion Hotel TR 3967 NE 1/47 II GV
Early C19. Mainly 4 storeys and semi-basement stuccoed. Divided into 3 sections. The right hand section has one 9-light bay through all floors and a round-headed entrance. The centre portion has 3 sashes set in moulded architraves and flanked by rusticated pilasters. The 1st floor has a verandah with tent-shaped canopy. The ground floor has a modern built out portion and steps to street. The left hand section is of 3 storeys and basement stuccoed. Slate roof with 1 dormer. 2 triple sashes on 2nd floor, two 5-light bays on the 1st floor and a built out portion on the ground floor. Row of 9 urns at 1st floor level on the Albion Street elevation. Charles Dickens stayed here in 1839, 1840, 1845, 1849 and 1859 and wrote part of Nicholas Nickleby here.
