RAMSGATE WELLINGTON CRESCENT TR 3865 SE (north side) 10/420 Nos. 1 to 14 GV II Terrace row. 1817 to 1824. Stock brick, part rendered with slate roof. Three storeys and basement (to right) of 5 bays. 4 storeys and basement (6 bays) and taller 4 storeys and basement (4 bays). Rusticated base with continuous ground floor Doric colonnade with continuous tented verandah on 1st floor with simple rails, trellised piers and valancing, with circular and bobbin-shaped patterns. Parapet and stacks ranged along whole length. End right house (No. 1) canted out of segment, with extra 4th storey added with 3 mullioned and transomed windows. Diocletian to 2nd floor, tripartite full height sash on 1st floor, and tripartite sash to ground floor, with panelled door to left. All other houses with glazing bar sashes to 2nd floor (some now sashes) and margin light French windows on 1st floor with traceried rectangular fanlights matching the pattern of the verandah iron work (3 bays each unit). Most verandahs divided by boarded or railed partitions. Variety of doors, mostly still original panel and moulded central vertical rail with (traceried) semi-circular fanlights. Basements with sashes, the areas, beneath the colonnade often now covered in, with 2 height spiked rails (original pattern) largely surviving. Left return (to No. 14) with rustic base continued round, with double central half-glazed doors and sidelights under semi-circular fanlight in elliptical recessed doorway. Similar round headed openings and fenestration pattern as the opposite side elevation of No. 15. A mirror image of Nos. 15-29, the whole Crescent bisected by The Plains of Waterloo. Only Nos. 1 to 7 had been built by the time of Collard and Hurst's 1822 map of Ramsgate. (See also Busson, Ramsgate, 105; B.O.E. Kent II, 1983, 429).
