Description

RAMSGATE ST AUGUSTINE'S ROAD TR 3764 SE (South side) 18/365 Chartham Terrace and 13.8.68 garden wall to right GV II Terrace. By Charles Habershon. Knapped flint with stock brick details and ashlar dressings. Slate roof. Three storeys and basement with double attics with 4 stacks ranged across roof, and counterset stack at end right. Four gabled semi-dormers and 4 gabled dormers. Large gable at end right, with smaller 3 storey gabled projection off right from that. Two storey crenellated polygonal porch at end left, and 3 gabled 2 storey porches to centre, all with diapered and ornamental brickwork. Nine sashes and 1 wooden casement to left on 2nd floor, 10 sashes (those in porches with four centred arched heads) on 1st floor, and 6 on ground floor with four centred arched and half-glazed doors. Boarded door in right end gable, from which projects a flint and brick wall about 6 feet high and running northwards about 20 metres. The southern, seaward elevation is less irregular and complex with 4 two storey and basement canted bays, and 3 storey and basement canted bay in large shallow projecting gable at end left; 9 bay frontage of mixed sashes and wooden casements with four centred arched heads to 1st floor and to half-glazed doors. Habershon was both developer and architect of the Terrace, his avowed intention being to build higher than and block light from the church of Pugin's adjoining St. Augustine's complex.
