RAMSGATE CHATHAM STREET TR 3865 SW (east side) 9/91 Chatham House School and railed area GV II School. 1879-82 by Aaron Twyman, built by W.W. Martin. Salmon pink brick and terracotta with plain tiled roof. Built as 2 huge blocks with central tower ensemble. The northern block of 3 storeys and basement, with 2 gables to left and to right, with tower and turret between the 2 later. Central range broken into 6 bays by full height buttresses projecting as pinnacles over parapet. Stacks to left and to right. Large paired segmental windows on 2nd floor in central portion, groups of 4, 5 or 6 lancets in each bay on 1st floor, and paired segmental lights on ground floor and paired lights to basement. Moulded arched gateway to left, and smaller pedestrian arch to right (in gabled projections) the latter with bay window and balcony over, offset to right and to left. Southern block of 6 bays and end gables, with similar but more regular fenestration, with traceried windows on 2nd floor. Fleur-de-lys rails to Area. Rear elevation: similar treatment, with less crowded fenestration, and with the central block more-clearly distinguished, of 2 storeys and attic and domestic in appearance, with gable to left with stack, dormer to right, tripartite sashes on 1st floor, and canted bay and segmentally headed windows on ground floor. The school buildings particularly the northern block, contain a chapel, work-shops, laboratories, gymnasium, laundry, sanatorium and hall as well as teaching and residential facilities. A contemporary wrote in praise of the plumbing ("a perfectly drained establishment") and the 4 miles of hot water pipes. The school was founded on the site in 1809.
