Description

The following building shall be added to the list: SEVENOAKS THE DRIVE TQ 5355 No 15 2/200 (including Wall, Gateposts and Gate to Front and Terrace to rear) II House 1909 by Charles W Bowles FRIBA for the local artist Mary Heathcote Batchelor incorporating artist's studio on top floor. Kentish Vernacular style in close copy of a Wealden hall-house. Front elevation ground floor is brown brick in English bond, 1st floor is close-studded with leaf patterned pargetting between. Half- hipped tiled roof with end brick chimneystacks. 2 storeys and attics 4 windows. Central 2 window bays recessed with brackets. Attic artist's studio has triple hipped dormer with 9 leaded light casements. 1st floor has 4 triple casements. Ground floor has a series of mullioned windows with 6 light mullioned and transomed window to ground floor right hand side , 4 light mullioned and transomed window to staircase hall and plank door in Tudor style architrave. Rear elevation has catslide roof and 2 large gables (tile hung) with 2nd floor casements with pintle hinges. 1st floor has 5 casements and the ground floor has a French window flanked by casements and later right side lean to. Leading from the rear wall of the house is a terrace of knapped flints with a pattern of tiles set on edge and brick paving with 3 ironstone inserts and a circular feature of radiating sections of ironstone and tiles set on edge. Front of house has a pathway of ironstone setts and stone steps leading to wooden gateposts with tiled canopy over and gates with wooden centre post and 4 wrought iron bars to each. Interior has staircase hall having screen with internal mullions and marble floor with ash staircase. Lounge has a painting of the enclosed garden at Knole by Mary Batchelor built over a wooden fireplace with green Art Nouveau tiles and 2 cupboards with octagonal glazing divided by pilasters. Dining room has an arched bressamer with run out stops and brick fireplace. Cross beams with run out stops. Main bedroom has brick fireplace. Series of plank doors.
