Description
EYNSFORD High Street 1. (To NW of) 5280 Walls on NE and SW sides of NW garden at Little Mote (qv) TQ 5465 12/57A II 2. Two walls. Not later than mid C18; possibly medieval. Coursed flint with brick and flint coping.
N E wall about eight feet high and twenty inches deep at base; coping partly removed but incorporates a Roman tile. Wall returns S W for a short distance at river end with footings beyond; three are brick quoins here with the flint quoin near the base.
S.W. wall possibly a little less high; similar flint masonry. In two sections. Short N W section extends to river where there are brick quoins. Main section of S W wall retains more of its coping which comprises four courses of brickwork, one with brick cogging; flints along the top. The wall is slightly thicker at its S E end and terminates at a point parallel with the external chimney breast of the house in its S W elevation. It is thought that the walls are in themselves medieval or are on the boundary lines of a garth on N W of the house. See Archaeologia Cantiana, 1971. P.119.
