Description

1. 5280 COWDEN COWDEN Furnace Lane Scarlets TQ 44 SW 52/330 10.9.54. II 2. Late mediaeval building, possibly a hall although roof is of queen strut type with side purlins and wind braces. Later C16 alterations and modern gabled additions at both ends. In centre, 2 storeys. Ground floor with exposed framing and vertical half timbering and plaster infilling. Various large restored lattice windows of different sizes and small C16 oak door to right with carved 4-centred head piece (up 2 stone steps). Modern door to left. Plinth of random stone. Projecting tiled croft over ground floor windows supported on roughly carved brackets. 1st floor tile hung with lattice windows, eaves and bracket gutter and tile roof. Coupled ridge chimney stack. Interior, with C16 inglenook fireplace with carved bracket in centre. Some good plain C18 panelling and back of church pew incorporated in panelled dado. Historic associations with the old iron industry. Rear elevation all of exposed framing with plaster filling above, brick below; and 3 original windows. Listing NGR: TQ4432440134
