Description

1. 5280 COWDEN COWDEN The Square (North Side) Gainsford House TQ 4640 9/341 l0. 9.54. II GV 2. Originally stable buildings belonging to the Crown Inn and now converted into private house. Probably incorporating Cl6 or C17 framed structure but with later elevational treatment. Standing at corner and at right angles to the Crown Inn, and connected by covered way over yard entrance. This connecting link is tile hung on lst floor with leaded casement window. Lead coping to parapet and concealed gutter behind with tile roof. Open yard entrance below with ornamental cast iron gate and corner brackets. East elevation (facing Square). 2 storeys. Painted brick and tile hung above with lead coping to parapet and concealed gutter behind. Tiled roof with south end ½ hipped end ridge chimney stack. Modern square paned leaded casements in oak frames. South elevation. 2 storeys and gable end attic window. Projecting ground floor of painted weatherboarding with continuous tiled hood over. Casement window to left. Tile hung on 1st floor with corner fillets and tile hung gable end. Casement window in centre with small attic window above. To left, Cl8 panelled door in corner with small light over and tile hanging above. Tiled roof. North elevation facing garden. Painted brick and weatherboarding above with tile roof and gable end. Late Cl8 or early Cl9 with modern restoration. The Stable buildings, the Crown Inn and Gainsford House form a group with No 2 High Street. Listing NGR: TQ4655940511
