Description

The following building shall be added to the list: 1. 5280 CHIDDINGSTONE BOUGH BEECH TQ 54 NW 50/210 Barn immediately south west of Coles Farmhouse II Barn. Circa early C18. Weatherboarded timber frame on brick plinth. Plain clay tile roof with half-hipped ends and hipped midstrey with deeply overhanging eaves at front. The timber frame of the south end wall was blown down in gale in 1987. Plan: 5 bays with wider central bay separated from the rest of the barn by low partitions and with a midstrey at the front. Either side of the midstrey there are outshuts at the front. Exterior: east front has central hipped-roof midstrey on small brick piers with a small doorway to its left and a window above. To the left and right of the midstrey the main roof is carried down over outshuts which might have been formerly open fronted. At the rear (west) a pair of plank doors in the central waggon entrance. Interior: except for the south end wall the frame is largely complete. The walls are close studded with tension braces. Jowled posts, arch braces to the tie-beam and queen-post trusses. Common rafter roof with no ridge-piece, staggered butt purlins, and straight wind braces over the central bay only. The central bay is flanked by low boarded stud partitions on brick plinths.
