GV II
Barn. Probably C17 extended and re-roofed probably in C18. Weatherboarded timber frame. Red clay plain-tile half hipped roof.
Plan: 5-bay barn with 2 small later doorways on either side in bays 2 and 4 and another in the south west end onto the road. The 2 south west end bays are a later addition which appear to be coeval with the re-roofing of the barn and possibly added early in C18 when the house, The Bower, (qv) was built.
Exterior: The walls are entirely weatherboarded. Two later diagonally- boarded doors symmetrically-placed on either side and another at the centre of the south west end, all with inclined boards above forming small hoods. On the north west side at the centre between the 2 doorways under the eaves, there is a round convex clock-face painted and with gilded hands and Roman numerals.
Interior: The clock's movement is boxed in but the large weight is suspended from a tie-beam.
The timber framed structure is complete. The original 3 bays at the north east end have close-studded walls and curved tension braces above the mid-rail. The massive wall-posts have only slight jowling and there are arched-braces to the tie-beams above which is a later probable C18, queen-post roof structure with clasped side-purlins, intact common rafters and ridge-board. This roof continues over the 2 bays at the south west end which has similar but lighter scantling walls. At the junction of the earlier and later parts between bays 3 and 4 there are 2 pairs of wall-posts, side-by-side, complete with 2 tie-beams and braces.
