Description

HORTON KIRBY RAYS HILL 1. 5280 Reynolds Place TQ 56 NE 3/198 II 2. C16 and C18. There was a mansion here said by Hasted in his History and Topographical Survey of Kent (1778-1799) to have been bigger than Franks, but most of it was pulled down in 1703 following storm damage. The south front of the present building is half-E shaped. The centre portion is the oldest part, probably C17, refaced in the C18 when the south-east wing was added. Both these portions are of painted brick with a hipped tiled roof. Two storeys, 4 windows. The east wall is of brick in English Bond. The central portion has casement windows with small square leaded panes, the south-east wing sash windows with glazing bars intact. The south-west wing is a C19 addition of 2 windows faced with roughcast. The interior contains C16 panelling, a wooden arched doorcase with decorated spandrels, and early C16 stone fireplace with oak leaf spandrels some early C16 stained glass and 2 priests holes.
