FARNINGHAM HIGH STREET 1. 5280 (north-east side) The Lion Hotel (formerly listed as Lion Inn) TQ 5467 9/97 1.8.52 II 2. C16, early C19 and late C19. Half H-shaped building, of which the wings are of unequal length. The north-west or long wing is a timber-framed building with plastered front. Its first floor oversails on a moulded bressumer. Tiled roof. Two storeys. Five casement windows. The north-west face of the main block, which makes an L with the above, is also timber-framed and plastered. Its first floor originally oversailed but has been underbuilt in brick, now painted. Large and small gable. Oriel window on first floor beneath the large gable, with cove below it and small gable over it. Tiled roof. Two storeys. Two casement windows. Round this is an early C19 L-wing comprising the south-east front and the projecting south-west or shorter arm of the half-H. The south-east front has 3 storeys and 5 windows. Red brick. The 3 centre window bays project slightly and have an iron balcony on the first floor. Painted modillion cornice above the first floor of the whole. Cornice and parapet of Roman cement. Glazing bars intact on the second floor only. Two Venetian windows on the ground floor and later C19 round- headed iron porch between them. Large curved bay at the south end of the first floor with a tent-shaped canopy over. The south-west and north-west walls of this wing are of buff brick and only have 2 storeys. Each has a large similar bow window on the upper floor. The other window spaces of the south-west front are blind, except in the centre of the first floor, which has an iron balcony above a round-headed doorway. Late C19 addition in north-east corner. This was a coaching inn along Watling Street. The interior has early C19 panelling up to dado level in the bar with painted shields. Early C19 glazed and panelled bar. Early C19 staircase.
