Description

TQ 54 NE 5/139 HILDENBOROUGH, TONBRIDGE ROAD, No 99 (Woodside Cottage) (Formerly listed under LONDON ROAD) 2.12.76 II House. Probably C17. Framed construction, the ground floor underbuilt in brick. The framing, of slender scantling, is exposed on the first floor centre and right, the left hand end of the front elevation is tile-hung to the first floor; peg-tile roof; brick stack. Plan: The house faces approximately north and is slightly set back from the road. 3-room lobby entrance plan with the entrance to left of centre facing the axial stack. Details of plan unclear at time of survey (1988) as there was no access to the interior or rear but the 2 left hand rooms are probably heated from back-to-back fireplaces with an unheated lower and service room to the right (west). Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front with a C20 gabled porch to the lobby entrance, the porch re-using old timbers. 3 ground floor late C20 small-pane timber casements; first floor window left and C19 or C20 2-light timber casement, 4 panes per light, the 4 other first floor windows C19 or C20 4-pane. The roof is half-hipped at ends. Rebuilt triple shafts to the axial stack. Interior: Inaccessible at time of survey but may retain C17 features. The roof construction may also be of historic interest and an internal inspection could necessitate revising the suggested dating. A 1957 photograph in the National Monument Record shows that there have been a number of alterations to the exterior since that date. Listing NGR: TQ5681848606
