Description
HADLOW COURT LANE TQ 64 NW 6/57 The High House
II
Cottage. Early/mid C17, renovated with an extension of circa 1987. Timber- framed, east end is still timber-framed nogged with brick and has ragstone footing, rest underbuilt with C19 brick, first floor is clad with painted weatherboarding; brick stack and C19 chimneyshaft; peg-tile roof. Extension is brick and first floor level is clad with peg-tile and peg-tile roof.
Plan: Main block faces north. It has a 2-room plan. Larger left room heated by axial stack backing onto unheated service room. Former front doorway towards right end blocked circa 1987. Main entrance now into one-room plan rear block projecting at right angles to rear of right end.
The original cottage, the main block, is 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace, the circa 1987 extension is 2 storeys, C19 lean-to outshot on right (west) end.
Exterior: Regular 2-window front of circa 1987 casements with glazing bars. Similar windows around the rest of the house. Doorway into rear block. Main block has tall roof, half-hipped both ends.
Interior: Original framed structure of main block is well-preserved on the first floor. The large framing has wide curving tension braces and show the positions of most of the original windows. One blocked window in the rear wall has diamond mullions and the owner claims that there is another similar window in the west end wall. The right room, former service room, and the chamber above have plain joists. The left room, the parlour/living room, and the chamber above, have chamfered and scroll-stopped axial beams. 2-bay roof of collared tie-beam trusses with clasped side purlins and small windbraces.
The High House is an interesting and well-preserved example of a small early/mid C17 house.
