HADLOW CARPENTERS LANE TQ 65 SW 3/13 Hope Farmhouse 20.10.54 II Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17, enlarged and refurbished in early C18, new parlour wing in early C19. Most is Flemish bond brick with decorative use of burnt headers but parts to the rear are timber-framed behind weatherboarding; brick stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof. Plan and Development: Farmhouse facing east north east, say east, towards the lane. The main block has a 3-room lobby entry plan. The right end room is unheated and was probably a service room. In the centre is the former kitchen and to the left the former parlour. An axial stack between kitchen and parlour servies back-to-back fireplaces. As far as can be seen from the roof the original house was the 2 heated rooms, maybe with a single storey service room to right. The main block was enlarged to include the service room in the early C18 at which time the front framing was replaced with brick. Also a stair block was added onto the back of the parlour under a roof parallel to the main block and to rear of the kitchen a one-room plan bakehouse block was built at right angles to the main block. It has a large projecting outer lateral stack and until circa 1950 had a large oven projection. On the left (south end) a 2-room plan parlour crosswing was added in the early c19. It has an axial stack between the rooms and it projects very slightly forward from the main block. 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace of the main block. Exterior: Regular but not symmetrical 1:4-window front. The 4-window section of the main house has C19 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and 12 (4/8)-pane sashes on the first floor. Front doorway is left of centre and contains a part-glazed 6-panel door in a panelled doorcase under a shallow flat hood on pairs of shaped timber brackets. The early C19 parlour croswing is a little taller and has 12-pane sashes and those in the left end wall are in tripartite sashes. All the front windows have rubbed gauged brick arches. The main block roof is half-hipped each end and the stack has a C17 staggered chimneyshaft. The parlour crosswing is hipped each end. Rear of house is partly weatherboarded and has C19 and C20 casements, the older ones with glazing bars. The right (north) end wall of the main block has the oldest windows in the house. Each floor has a casement containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Interior: The late C16/early 17 section of the main block is well-preserved although the fireplaces are blocked by C20 grates. The beams on each floor are chamfered with scroll stops and the roof is carried on tie-beam trusses with clasped side purlins and large curving windbraces. The winder stair from the first floor to the attic is original but the present main stair is part of the early C18 improvements; it is a straight flight with a balustrade of turned balusters with blocks. (The newel post may be a replacement.) The bakehouse block has plain chamfered crossbeams and the roof is inaccessible. The fireplace is blocked but its large size is apparent and its chamfered oak lintel is exposed. The house also contains some early C18 joinery detail, notably the built-in wardrobe cupboard on the stair landing; fielded panel doors on H-hinges and moulded cornice.
