Description

HADLOW COURT LANE TQ 64 NW 6/62 Barn approx 35m north west - of the Old Farmhouse, Style Place GV II Barn. Late C17, partly rebuilt in the mid/late C19. A small part is weatherboarded over probably C17 timber-framing, the rest is C19 brick tending towards Flemish bond, red brick to rear and ochre-coloured to the front. Peg- tile roof. Plan: The barn faces south east, towards the farmhouse. The main barn is split into 3 compartments under a continuous hayloft. At the right (north east) end is a room containing the stair up to the hayloft. Slightly left of centre is a cartshed and the left end section is part of a stable along with the lower and narrower range projecting from that end. It is not clear how the C17 barn worked since its walls have been so much rebuilt in the c19. The original framed walls survive only at first floor level on the front and end walls. Exterior: Irregular front. The ground floor level is brick, the first floor is weatherboarded. All the ground floor openings have segmental arches over. There are 2 doorways; to right into the barn and a wider one to left to the cartshed. In both cases the brick surround stands proud of the wall (there is a similar small doorway into the stable wing alongside). The windows are fixed pane with glazing bars. 2 similar windows on the first floor and a hayloft loading hatch to right. The roof is half-hipped each end. The stable extension is gable-ended. Interior: The hay floor is supported on plain C19 crossbeams and joists. C17 4-bay roof of tie-beam trusses. The arch braces have been removed. Trusses have staggered butt purlins and raking struts. Most of the common rafters are original. Listing NGR: TQ6469948957
