Description

HILDENBOROUGH LONDON ROAD (north east side) TQ 54 NE 5/134 Quince Cottage GV II House, formerly 2 cottages. Probably late C18/early C19, substantial internal alterations of the late C20 and coeval additions at the right (east end) and rear. Flemish bond brick to the ground floor, first floor framed construction clad with weatherboarding; slate roof; brick stacks. Plan and Development: South-facing. The original arrangement was a pair of small mirror plan 2-cell cottages, each with a principal room at the front heated from fireplaces in the central axial stack with narrow rear service rooms and stairs in the outer rear corners. The original entrances are said to have been on the rear (north) elevation, in the centre (information from owner). All the internal partitions have been removed, a 1-room plan extension has been added at the right (east) end, re-using old materials. The rear has also been extended. Exterior: 2 storeys. Roof gabled at ends. Asymmetrical 3:1 window front (south) elevation, the right hand window to the C20 addition. C20 plank front door to right of centre with a lean-to porch with curly bargeboards. 4 first floor 1- and 2-light C20 timber casements; C20 square bay window to ground floor left. Interior: Carpentry extensively renewed in the C20. Roof: Not inspected. In spite of the alterations this is one of a roadside group and is included for group value. Listing NGR: TQ5580049400
