Description
HILDENBOROUGH NIZELS LANE TQ 55 SW 1/176 Nizels Hoath
GV II
House. Probably late medieval with C17 alterations. Description only approximate as access unobtainable at time of survey (1988). Framed construction, underbuilt in brick; peg-tile roof; stack with triple shaft with corbelled cornice.
Plan: A 1957 photograph in the National Monument Record shows a lobby entrance plan with a gabled projection left of the front door. The stack may have been inserted into the cross passage of a medieval open hall house.
Exterior: The 1957 photograph shows a 4-window front with enlarged modern casements and a flat porch hood to the front door.
Interior: Likely to be of interest, particularly the roof construction.
This building might deserve upgrading on internal inspection. An internal inspection should precede any planning decision on the house to ensure that internal features of interest, including a possibly medieval roof, are not disturbed.
