Description
HILDENBOROUGH POWDER MILL LANE (west side) TQ 54 NE 5/192 Outbuilding immediately north - east of Meopham Bank
GV II
Outbuilding, said to have been used as a studio by the painter, John Herring, who lived at Meopham Bank 1853-1865. Early C19. Rendered with a slate roof; brick stack.
Plan: Sited north east of the house between the kitchen wing and stable block. A small, square building facing south east with a stair cell at the left end with external access. The original function of the building is not clear, it may have been an implement shed with apple loft over but has functioned as a dairy. Herring was photographed in his studio (reproduced in Oliver Beckett's J.F. Herring and Sons (1981)) which is identified as this building.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Hipped slate roof. 2-window south east front with tail paired plank doors to the right, a 2-light C19 casement to the left and 2 12- pane C19 first floor sashes. A door on the left return gives access to the stair. 2 casements to the rear elevation. The brick stack in the rear right corner is probably a C20 iddition.
Interior: Plain, the stair cell enclosed by a full height boarded partition.
Herring, who was a coachman before he became a successful painter, specialized in paintings of horses and rural scenes.
Group value with Meopham Bank and the stable block.
