Description
HILDENBOROUGH UNDERRIVER TQ 55 SE 2/214 Cattle shed and pig sties immediately south east of the threshing barn at Rumshed Farm
GV II
Cattle shed and pig sties. Probably mid C19. Timber construction cattle shed with brick walls; peg-tile roof; brick pig sties.
Plan: On a west east axis. An ingeniously-planned dual purpose building. The north-facing 6-bay open-fronted cattle shed is 2 bays deep with a feeding passage at the rear (south). The feeding passage roof is continued as a pent roof to a -set of 6 pig pens adjoining the cattle shed on the south side. The middle posts of the 2 centre bays of the cattle shed have been removed and the stall partitions no longer exist although their position can be determined by redundant mortises.
Exterior: Single storey. 6 open-fronted bays to the north elevation divided by timber posts on short brick piers, with concave braces from the posts to the wallplate. To the rear (south) the gabled roof has sprocketted eaves over the feeding passage and is extended beyond as a pent roof to the pig sties, the wallplate supported on brick piers at the north ends of the dividing walls of the pig sties.
Interior: The cattle shed has a very neatly-carpentered interior. The middle row of posts are braced 2 ways to the tie beams, the outer posts braced 3 ways, twice to the wall-plate and once to the tie beams. Clasped purlin collar rafter roof construction with a ridge board and raking struts, the carpentry fixed with a mixture of pegs and nails. Original brick mangers intact. These have a timber trim and recesses for timber tethering posts.
A good example of a well-made and carefully-planned C19 farmbuilding. Part of a good farmstead group at Rumshead Farm, formerly called St Julians Farm. The parish and district boundary runs through the farmhouse, part of which is in Sevenoaks District.
