Description
HADLOW COURT LANE TQ 64 NW 6/64 Animal House and Stables approx - 35m west of the Old Farmhouse, Style Place
GV II
Animal house and stables. Mid and late C19. Ochre-coloured Flemish bond brick, the stable includes red brick with burnt headers; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Building on a north west - south east axis is in 2 parts. The larger barn-like animal house at the north west end faces south west and is mid C19. The stable with granary over faces north east and is late C19, built onto the end of the animal house.
Exterior: The animal house has a symmetrical front with a window (now boarded over with segmental arch heads) either side of the central doorway. It is relatively small with segmental arch head and the brick surround stands proud of the wall face. It contains an old plank door. Animal house is gable-ended with circular owl holes each end. Its rear wall includes a pattern of ventilation holes. The stable is lower. On the south west a straight join shows between the two builds. The roof maintains the same eaves and pitch this side but it is lower and narrower. This side is blind and includes a plain brick buttress. On the north east side the wide cartshed/garage-size doorway is C20 and there is a first floor doorway into the granary. Stable roof is gable-ended.
Interior: The animal house is open to a 4-bay roof of interrupted tie-beam trusses of large scantling. The joints are pegged although many have since been augmented with bolts and iron straps. They have clasped purlins and king posts above the collar. The stable has plain carpentry detail; its roof was not inspected.
These buildings are part of an unusually complete group of brewery and ancillary buildings around the Old Farmhouse, Style Place (q.v.).
