Description
HADLOW HARTLAKE ROAD, GOLDEN GREEN TQ 64 NW 6/69 Hartlake Barn 20.9.76 GV II
House in former threshing barn. Late C17/early C18, converted circa 1976. Weatherboarded timber frame on brick footings (replaced circa 1976), peg-tile roof.
Plan: Circa 1970 the barn was floored and converted to a 2-room plan house with central entrance hall and staircase. It faces north north east, say north. The central front doorway recess occupies the width of the former barn doorway. To rear the roof is carried down over an open-fronted outshot which includes a couple of rooms. The outshot was probably built in the C19. To right a small single storey building forms part of the house. Its former agricultural function is not known. It is probably C19. The barn was originally open to the roof. The house is 2 storeys.
Exterior: Symmetrical 3-window front of circa 1976 timber casements with no glazing bars. The front doorway is set in a recess. It is a C20 plank door flanked by small windows. The roof is hipped both ends. To rear the roof continues over the outshot and the eaves here are carried on a 4-bay arcade of plain timber posts with straight up-braces.
Interior: Largely the result of the circa 1976 conversion. Nevertheless some of the framing is exposed on the first floor and the roof structure is complete. It is 4 bays. The tie-beam trusses are supported by large wall posts with formed jowls and straight arch braces, 2 queen posts between each tie and collar and the trusses take staggered butt purlins.
