Description

1. STAIR ROAD 5284 TQ 64 NW Hadlow Stair House 10/85 II 2. House. Early C17 with L wing including dairy added c.1700 to north east and further wing added to north vest c.1800. Refenestrated and small wing added to north east in late C19. Early C17 part has ground floor of brown brick, in flemish bond, tile hung 1st floor and tiled roof. 2 storeys, 2 windows. C1800 12 light casements on 1st floor and C20 3 light casements on ground floor. C19 iron pump attached to wall. External brick chimneystack and brick projection with bread oven to south east. Tall brick chimneystack at junction with later wing to north west. C1800 extension is partly of red brick with vitrified headers on ground floor and tile hung on 1st floor and of brown brick to left hand side. Tiled roof in 2 hips. 12 paned sashes to left and late C19 3 light bay to left hand side. The early C18 wing to north west was altered in the late C19. The ground floor is of red brick in flemish bond with some vitrified headers. The 1st floor is of fishscale tiles. Tiled roof, part hipped one end and with brick chimney stack to left. 2 storeys, 5 windows. 2 later flat roofed dormers. 1st floor has cross casements with C19 hexagonal glazing. Ground floor has 1 late C19 3 light canted bay, one sash with vertical glazing bars only and C20 brick and tiled porch. To north east is a c.1900 1 storey brick extension. To south of this is former dairy c.1700, the ground floor brick, the 1st floor hung with fishscale tiles and later gabled brick porch. Interior: Original part has kitchen with chamfered spine beam with run out stops and jowled posts. Fireplace has wooden bressumer with breadoven and 3 plank door. Dining room has thick chamfered spine beam with lamb's tongue stops, fireplace has deep wooden chamfered bressumer with lamb's tongue stops and spice niche. Half-winder staircase to 1st floor but roof timbers appear C18. C18 wing has sitting room with massive oak bressumer over fireplace and English bond brickwork to hearth. Exposed joists (originally plastered). Square spice cupboard add seats. Iron fire back dated 1744, Playroom has fine early C18 panelling, wooden mantlepiece with fluted keystone and pilasters and 2 panelled door with H L Hinges. Early C18 staircase with turned balusters and newel post with ball finial. Roof to C18 wing has staggered purlins and some C17 floorboards. One bedroom has a brick curved fireplace. Rooms over c.1800 wing have 2 early C19 basket grates with floral design. Listing NGR: TQ6090347720
