2/17 Barn about 15 metres east of Summerhill House

Barn. C17. Timber framed, weatherboarded, with corrugated iron roof. 4 timber-framed bays, built at right-angles to road, with midstrey to third timber-framed bay from north (road) end. North end bay formerly storeyed and partitioned off from rest of barn at least on first floor. Gable end jetty on solid-spandrel brackets to north. Roof gabled, with plain bargeboards to north. Full-height double doors to west. Lean-to to east, with low double doors and three small paned lights. Lean-to to south gable end. Single-storey brick shelter range added at right angles to west side of north bay. Interior: gunstock-jowled principal posts. C20 roof above tie-beam level. Posts and tie beams flanking midstrey morticed for arch braces, bases of west posts jowled on midstrey side, and midstrey side of east posts not grooved for infilling. Evidence for floor to north end bay, and for unbraced partition under tie-beam to south end of it. Small window with pegged cill and shutter groove, under wall-plate to centre of each side of north bay, and to north gable end, latter with a mullion. Tension braces to north gable end and arch braces to side walls of two north bays. Concave tension braces to south end bay and south gable end. Stave, lath and daub infilling above midrail, inside braces to north bays, flush with braces to south. Boarded threshing floor.
