Description

TQ 7444 MARDEN HIGH STREET (north side) 5/58 Old Church Cottage GV II House or special purpose building formerly shop, now house. Late C16, with C18 and C19 additions and alterations. Timber framed, weatherboarded, with plain tile roof. Two timber-framed bays, possibly a fragment of a slightly larger building. Two storeys and garret, on rendered plinth. Gabled. Brick ridge stack to left of centre (to right end of left bay). Irregular fenestration of two leaded casements; one two-light to left and one three-light to right. C18 single-bay painted brick addition (or rebuilding) to right, with plain tile roof, tall red brick stack in front slope of roof towards centre, small gabled rear dormer, and three-light segmental-headed rear ground-floor casement. Single-storey C19 painted brick extension projecting forwards from, and same width as, C18 section, with half-hipped roof to front and with slightly bowed multipane gable-end shop window. Panelled door to left of shop window. Interior: C16 section has exposed framing, with broad curved tension braces, chamfered axial beams, and shaped jowls to principal posts. Plain brick fireplace, possibly C17 or early C18, to right side of stack only. Clasped purlin roof with windbraces and diminishing principal rafters, largely re-assembled, with ridge-piece, in C19. Semi-circular brick fireplace to C18 section. Formerly known as The Hill Tea Room. Marked on OS. map as Church Hill Cottage. Abuts churchyard to left and rear. Listing NGR: TQ7445144615
