TQ 74 NW MARDEN TILDEN LANE (north side) 1/123 Great Tilden Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse, now house. C15 or early C16, late C16 or early C17, C18 and mid C19. Left wing red brick in Flemish bond. Ground floor of central section red brick in stretcher bond, first floor pebbledashed, with applied studding. Ground floor of right return weatherboarded, first floor pebbledashed. Plain tile roof. Central section comprises one timber-framed bay, morticed for axial subdivision and possibly the storeyed right end bay of a non-extant open hall. Single bay added to right in late C16 or early C17, and extended to rear by approximately one bay in late C17 or C18. C19 wing built to left side of central section and area between the two wings to rear infilled. 2 storeys. Bracketed jetty to front of central section. Left wing gabled to front with higher eaves and lower ridge than main range. Main range roof hipped to right, hip returning to rear. Brick ridge stack between central section and left wing. Projecting late C16 or early C17 stack to front elevation, spanning right end of central section and left end of added right bay, with galleted stone base set on galleted stone plinth and with three diagonally-set red and grey brick flues on brick plinth. Red and grey brick bread oven in English bond added to right side of stack, spanning rest of added right bay, with first floor built out and tile-hung with small front gable, above it. Irregular fenestration of 2 windows; one recessed 16-pane sash with splayed painted voussoirs to gable end of left wing and one three-light casement to left of stack. Ribbed door to left end of central section. Interior: exposed framing. Gunstock-jowled posts, tension braces, broadly-spaced close-studding and mortices for diamond mullion windows to central section. Four-centred-arched hollow- chamfered stone fireplace with shields to spandrels, to ground floor of added right bay, with blocked stone fireplace to first floor above. Plain brick fireplace to front of ground-floor of central section. Rear right bay has chamfered axial beam and joists, and brick and Bethersden marble flag floor. Re-roofed in C20.
