Description
BOUGHTON MONCHELSEA WIERTON HILL TQ 74 NE (East side)
2/65 Wierton Hall Farm Cottage
GV II
House, formerly cottages, now house. C15, with C16 and C17 alterations, early C19 addition and C19 facade. Timber framed, clad with tarred weather- boarding. Plain tile roof. Open hall of 2 unequal-length timber-framed bays, with storeyed end bays, built at right-angles to road. Right hall bay and front and rear of shorter left hall bay floored probably in C16. This possibly allowed for an enclosed hearth area towards the centre of the left hall bay on the ground floor, with the cross-passage retained behind it to left. Probably no access between right hall bay and left end bay on first floor, with left hall bay partitioned off. Cl7 masonry stack inserted across cross- passage, to rear of probable timber stack, or smoke bay, and left hall bay opened up and re-floored at slightly lower level. Early C19 addition to right, of 2 timber-framed bays and narrow central stack bay, with integral rear lean- to. 1 1/2 storeys, on rendered plinth. Hipped roof, with slightly lower ridge to right section. Multiple brick ridge stack to left end of left hall bay and brick stack in rear slope of roof towards right end. Irregular fenestration of four windows; one small gabled 2-light eaves dormer towards centre of hall, one flat-roofed 2-light through dormer to right end bay, and two flat-roofed 3-light and top-light through dormers to right addition. Ribbed door towards left end. Blocked doorway under stack. Rear lean-to to right section. Interior: exposed framing. Inserted cross-beam immediately to right of central truss, with 2 pegged posts beneath it indicating probable width of timber stack. Heavy-scantling arch-braces to central truss. 4-light diamond mullion window to ground floor of former right gable end. Stack with one tall plain stone to each jamb, and wooden bressumer. Roof said to have sans-purlin collared common rafters.
