Description

STAPLEHURST COUCHMAN GREEN TQ 74 NE LANE (East side) 2/83 Old Newstead II Farmhouse, now house. C16 or earlier, with early C17 and late C18 additions and alterations. Timber framed. Ground floor red and grey brick in Flemish bond, first floor tile-hung. Both floors of left end bay tile-hung. Plain tile roof. Open hall, possibly with one storeyed end-bay missing, running east-west. Early C17 addition of approximately 2 timber-framed bays, running south from west end. Late C18 single bay addition to south end of C17 section. East elevation: south wing 2 storeys and garret, east wing 2 storeys. Slightly higher eaves and ridge to south wing, with half- hipped roof to south end. East wing gabled and weatherboarded to east. Red and grey brick stack in English bond to rear (west) of C18 addition. Multiple red and grey brick stack in rear (west) slope of roof of C17 section towards junction with earlier range. Irregular fenestration of 5 windows; two 3-light casements to south wing, one flanked by 4-light wood mullion windows with diamond subsidiary mullions. One 2-light casement to east wing. Boarded door towards centre of south wing. Lean-to to east gable end of east wing. 2-storey addition to north side of east wing, with rendered ground floor, tile-hung first floor, gabled plain-tile roof and one 3-light casement. Interior not inspected. Formerly known as Newstead Farm. Formerly a moated site. Listing NGR: TQ7928145092
