LENHAM THE SQUARE TQ 8952 (central island) 10/227 The Chequers GV II Possibly Market Hall, Inn and Stables by Mid C18, now Cafe and Garage. Late C16 with C19 and late C20 alterations. Timber-framed core. Ground floor brick in Flemish bond, first floor formerly tile- hung, now weatherboarded. Plain tile roof. 2, probably separately framed, buildings; that to left L-plan, with rear wing to right possibly added in late C18 or early C19, that to right at right- angles, parallel to wing of other. 2 storeys, left range with hipped roof which returns along right side of rear wing. Right range hipped to front and rear. Shouldered red brick stack towards centre of front elevation of left range. Large red brick stack removed from right end of left section (photograph in possession of owner). Irregular fenestration of 4 glazing bar sashes, some late C20. Boarded door to garage with narrow 2-light fanlight over to left of left range. Half-glazed door with flat hood at right end of left range, and boarded door with flat hood to right of centre of right side elevation of right range. Interior: Jowled wall- posts, first-floor tension braces. Ground-floor joists in 4 directions. Some C19 boarded ceilings. Large well, possibly the Town Well, in ground floor, now blocked.
