Description

LENHAM HIGH STREET TQ 8952 (west side) 10/175 Nos. 6 and 8 26.4.68. GV II Houses and shop. C15 or C16 with mid C19 facade. Timber framed. Ground floor chequered red and grey brick in Flemish bond, first floor slightly later, red brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roof. Cross-wing to right, possibly with remains of hall to left. Stands slightly forward from other buildings. 2 storeys, attics and cellar on plinth, with moulded wood eaves cornice. Roof hipped to right, incorporating cross-wing, and half-hipped to left. Rear brick stack to left and brick stack in rear slope of roof off-centre to right. 2 hipped dormers. Regular fenestration of 3 glazing bar sashes. Ground floor windows have rubbed brick voussoirs within the red brick of the first floor. Central C19 shop front with door to either side, that to No. 8 to left with 6 fielded panels and blocked rectangular fan- light, that to No. 6 half-glazed, both with plain pilasters and flat hood which continues over shop window. Cellar hatch with segmental head under right-hand ground floor window. Front door of no. 8 leads into C19 flagged passage with weatherboarded sides created within original building and giving direct access to yard. Door off it to interior of no. 8. Interior: Cross-wing of 4 bays; 4th rear, bay now belongs to High Street No. 4. Exposed timbers. Listing NGR: TQ8980252136
