BROOMFIELD LOWER BROOMFIELD TQ 85 SW ROAD (east side) 2/12 Barn about 15 metres east of Church Farmhouse GV II
House, now barn. 15th or early 16th century, altered or re-assembled in 19th century. Timber framed. Right end of front elevation and ground floor of left end re-built in stone between principal posts. 19th century red brick in Flemish bond between exposed posts to centre of ground floor. Left three-quarters of first floor weather- boarded. Plain tile roof. 4 timber-framed bays; 2-bay open area with storeyed bay to right end [largely re-built] and possibly also to left [re-built in 19th century]. 2 storeys with hipped roof. Two 9-pane fixed lights to first floor. First floor door within weatherboarded section, towards right end, with single door on ground floor beneath. Double doors towards left end of ground floor. Lean-to to left end. Interior: exposed framing to first floor. Gunstock-jowled posts. Cambered central tie-beams with mortices for arch braces, evidence for fillet, and 3 central peg-holes for crown-post. Re-assembled smoke-blackened rafters over one bay; roof otherwise largely 19th century. Replaced studding. Tension braces. Shown on 1843 tithe map.
