Description

LEEDS UPPER STREET TQ 85 SW (east side) 3/118 Yew Tree House GV II Hall-house, formerly house row, now house. Late C15 with late C16 and C19 alterations. Timber-framed, ground floor clad in red brick with occasional grey headers in Flemish bond, first floor tile-hung. Late C15 open hall of 2 unequal bays, possibly with storeyed bay to left, now gone. Integral 2-bay cross-wing to right. Late C16 two-bay addition to right of cross-wing, parallel to road. 2 storeys. Roof over hall raised in C19 and gabled to junction with ridge of wing. Hip of wing continuous with slope of C19 roof and built up, probably in C19, with ridge parallel to road. C16 addition has steeper pitch, lower eaves, hipped to right with gablet. Late C16 red brick stack in front slope of roof at left end and early C19 stack to right side of wing. Irregular fenestration of two C19 first-floor casements. Four C19 ground-floor casements with segmental heads. Ribbed door in left end of C16 addition. Interior: Crown post to wing with 2 curved downward and 2 upward braces. Half of moulded dais beam survives carved with small shields alternately bearing portcullis, Tudor rose and George cross. Plain four-centred arched door- head beneath beam, spandrels carved with hammer to left and mallet pursing chisel to right. Tension braces. Large stone fireplace in left bay of hall with moulded jambs, one corbelled to top. Exposed timbers. Listing NGR: TQ8197352712
