Description

STAPLEHURST HIGH STREET TQ 7843 & TQ 74 SE (East side) 3/121 & 5/121 No. 4 (also known as 4 Church Hill Cottages), Peter Jones Opticians, and premises to rear. GV II House, with shop and offices. Late C16 or early C17, with C18 wing, mid C19 facade, and later alterations. Ground floor red brick in Flemish bond, first floor tile-hung. Plain tile roof. 3 timber- framed bays. 2 storeys, attic and cellars. Formerly jettied at least to rear to left. Gabled. Red and grey brick ridge stack towards left end, slender gable-end stack to right and rear stack to right. 2 gabled dormers with 2-light casements. Irregular fenestration of 3 sashes; two 4-pane towards left end and one 16- pane towards right end. Cambered head to right ground-floor window. Half-glazed door, with cambered head, up 1 step towards left end to Peter Jones, and half-glazed door up 2 steps towards centre, to No. 4. Two-storey single-bay C18 rear wing to left, with red and grey brick ground floor, tile-hung first floor, hipped plain-tile roof, projecting gable-end stack, 16-pane rear gable end sash, and door to left side. Shorter 2-storey rear wing towards centre, with 2-storey lean-to in same materials to its long right side; ground floor red and grey brick in English bond, first floor weatherboarded, half- hipped plain tile roof. Interior: only partly inspected. Exposed framing to first floor, with gunstock-jowled posts, arch braces, and shutter groove. Exposed former rear jetty. Listing NGR: TQ7862443488
