WILLINGTON STREET 1. 5278 Willington Court TQ 75 NE 9/387 II
2. House. Built in 1896 and an attempt to reproduce accurately a late medieval Kentish Wealden hall-house, with stack insertion, windows and 2 storey porch of the C17. Partially structural timber framing with plaster infill, partially red brick (some herringbone) on ragstone plinth. Tiled roof. Form is that of 2 bay Wealden hall-house, jettied on all sides, with outshot to rear and 2 storey porch obscuring right hand hall bay. 2 storeys and attics,4 windows. To left of porch the end left bay has ground floor of red brick in stretcher bond and 1st floor close studded framing with plaster infill. This is jettied and supported on carved wooden bracket with rose and pelican. To right of this is a 2 storey red brick 'hall bay' with square framing. 1 triple casement window to 1st floor left end bay and two 4 light mullioned and transomed windows to 'hall bay'. Portion to right of porch is timbers framed throughout with plaster infill. Floral carved bracket to jetty. 1 triple casement window to each floor with long central casement. 2 storeyed projecting timber framed porch in position of 2nd hall-bay with gable and carved bargeboards. Small square leaded light to attic, 4 light mullioned and transomed casement to 1st floor, with coved panel with blank shield and legend 'Willington Court'. Ground floor has dums, porch has seats and a doorcase with moulded architrave and broach stops. Plank door with large decorative hinges. Hipped tiled roof with 2 triple dormers and carved bargeboards. Cruciform central brick chimneystack. Left side elevation is timber framed and plastered and has 6 light oriel window with coved overhang bearing plasterd decoration of Tudor roses. Ground floor has similar bay of 8 lights. The right side elevation is also timber framed and has a 1st floor 7 light canted bay flanked by side lights and ground floor 6 light square bay flanked by side lights. Rear elevation has 8 light dormer and brick catslide extension to right and early C20 brick and glazed conservatory to left. The Dining Room contains a plastered 4-centred arch to the fireplace with brattishing and spandrels decorated with Tudor roses, a wooden ceiling with thick spine beams and criss cross ribbing and 2 cupboard doors at each side of the fireplace which may be genuine reused C17 panels. Staircase of 1898 has moulded baluster and corner posts with carving of typical C17 type. Some of the panelling at the base of the staircase may be C17 plank and muntin panelling. Included as an interesting example of the Kentish Vernacular Revival style and reflecting the knowledge of Wealden houses in the late C19.
