BISHOPS LANE TQ 74 NW HUNTON (south-west Side) 4/63 Nos. 1 and 2 Bishops House GV II House, now house pair. C15 or early C16, altered in late C16 or early C17 and in C18. Timber framed, with exposed framing and rendered infilling to first floor and red brick in stretcher bond to ground floor. Plain tile roof. 2 parallel ranges. Right section C15 or early C16; 2 roughly equal-length storeyed timber-framed bays built at right-angles to road, probably the right cross-wing of a larger house. Left section, probably with C17 or earlier core, of similar proportions, now at right- angles to road, adjoining long left side of right section. 2 storeys and attic. Right section jettied to front and rear gable ends; front jetty underbuilt, rear within later extension. First floor of right section close-studded with jowled posts. Plain crown-post to gable with foot braces. Left section (or front of it) apparently built against right, with applied close studding and one jowled post to left. Both gables half-hipped. Valley between 2 sections bridged by pitched roof parallel to road. C17 multiple brick ridge stack with moulded cornice towards left end of bridging roof, and serving both ranges. Leaded 4-light mullioned window to left gable. Small dormer to right side of right section. Irregular fenestration of 5 leaded casements; one 2-light to left section, one deep central 2-light within larger blocked opening to right section, (probably an oriel) flanked by late C16 or early C17 2-light ovolo-moulded mullion frieze windows. Single-light casement in later lean-to to right. Half-glazed door to centre of left gable and boarded door to right side of right lean-to. Projecting C17 timber- framed gabled stair turret towards rear of long right side, now partly within lean-to. Interior: left section not inspected. Exposed framing to right section with evidence for original internal subdivisions. Moulded octagonal crown-post on cambered tie-beam with solid-spandrel braces. Late C16 or early C17 inserted attic floor and spiral stair- case with newel post ground floor to attic. Formerly known as Bishop's Oast. South (rear) elevation formerly with C18 stuccoed cladding, parapet and pilastered doorway. Listing NGR: TQ7198748874
