SHINGLE BARN LANE TQ 75 SW HUNTON (South Side) 2/90 Barn about 50 metres south-east of Buston Manor 23.5.67 GV II *
Barn. Late C14 and mid C16, with C18 and C19 alterations. Timber framed, weatherboarded, on stone plinth. Plain tile roof. Lies north- south. 4 timber-framed bays of a late C14 barn which formerly extended further to north. Missing north end bays replaced by 2 mid C16 bays. Front and rear aisles to all 6 bays. Midstreys to second and fifth bays from south. Hipped roof. Vestiges of porches to east side, rising from aisle. Low double doors to west, that at north end blocked by granary (q.v.). Interior: Late C14 section has 4 pairs of barely- jowled principal posts (south gable end rebuilt in early C193. Curved passing shores and arch braces of square section. Sans-purlin roof to third bay from south survives, with collared common rafters, rest of south roof rebuilt in C18 and C19. Evidence for reversed assembly to aisle on east side. Mid C16 bays with gunstock jowls to principal posts, curved passing shores, and arch braces to tie-beams and arcade plate. Clasped purlin roof with diminishing principal rafters, windbraces, and vertical queen-struts to collars. Later alterations to aisle studding incorporate re-used late C16 or early C17 moulded timber of domestic origin, probably from Buston Manor.
