Description

OLD LOOSE HILL TQ 7552 LOOSE (West Side) 6/195 Brook House 25.7.52 GV II House. C16 or earlier with C17, C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Timber framed. Front elevation rendered. Exposed framing with plaster infilling to ground floor of left cross-wing. Plain tile roof. C16 or earlier cross-wing to left, of 2 timber-framed bays. Late C16 or early C17 central section of 3 timber-framed bays including central stack bay, probably of lobby entry plan, and probably formerly with further bay or wing to right, since replaced. Present right cross- wing of similar plan and date to central section but probably brought from elsewhere, separately framed with former long outside wall abutting central section. Short late C18 or early C19 rear addition partly infilling re-entrant angle. 2 storeys and attic. First floor of left cross-wing jettied. Ground floor close-studded with arch-braces. Right cross-wing flush with main range to front. Gable to front of each cross- wing. Lower ridge to left wing. Multiple filleted brick ridge stack to left of centre and brick stack in right slope of roof towards rear of right wing. 2 gabled eaves dormers to main range, that to left with small 2-light casement. 3-light moulded mullion window with diamond subsidiaries to gable of right wing. Irregular fenestration of 4 casements with moulded wooden cornices; one 3-light to each wing and one 4-light beneath each dormer. Blocked 4-light diamond mullion window to ground floor of left wing. 10-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and transomed window to left end of main range with one 2-light mullioned window to each side at different levels. One 4-light casement with moulded cornice and 2-light mullioned frieze window, to right end of main range. Corniced 3-light casement to ground floor of right wing. Further ovolo-moulded mullion windows to rear, and canted C19 bay window. Ribbed door with flat hood beneath stack. Half-glazed door with flat bracketed hood to junction of main range and right wing. Interior: exposed framing. Plain, chamfered crown-post to cross-wing. Chamfered beams and joists to central section. Chamfer-stopped stone fireplaces with wooden bressumers, to main range and right wing. Blocked 4-light mullioned window to south wall of right wing, within present building. Late C18 staircase with lightly-moulded balusters and chinoiserie top gate, in rear addition. Listing NGR: TQ7580952052
