Description

WELL STREET TQ 7552 LOOSE (East Side) 6/209 Former Oasthouse about 20 metres south-south-east of The Wool House and 25.5.67 Wool House Cottage (formerly listed as building in the grounds GV of The Old Wool House) II Oasthouse, formerly private museum, now outbuilding. Late C18 or early C19, altered in 1920s. Small blocks of coursed galleted stone, with tooled stone dressings. Corrugated iron roof. Rectangular stowage or barn oast approximately 70' long and 30' wide, partly built in to side of hill. 3 storeys. Ground floor partly underground at south-east (left) end. Mono-pitch roof. Long- and-short tooled stone quoins. Irregular fenestration of 3 evenly-spaced latticed 6-light mullioned and transomed windows to second floor. Former loading doorway to each floor at north-west (right) end, separated only by stone lintels; upper doorways now containing latticed lights. Small 3-light wooden diamond mullion window to right end of ground floor. Interior: most of ground floor apparently occupied by enclosed stone hearths. Building formerly had 2 further weatherboarded storeys, and was part of an usually large complex of similar buildings. Included for group value. (R. Thornburgh, Exploring Loose Village, 1978).
