Description
STAPLEHURST HUSHEATH HILL TQ 74 SE (East side)
3/147A Barn about 8 metres south-east of Hush Heath Manor
GV II
Barn. C17. Timber framed, clad with weatherboarding. Red and grey brick plinth in Flemish bond. Stone plinth to left (east) gable end. 5 timberframed bays with rear (south) aisle, and central midstrey. Roof hipped to right, gabled to left, projecting by one rafter couple beyond the gable-end wall. Purlins project still further, with a short tie-beam lapped over their ends, to carry a hipped plain-tile hoist-hood. Long raked braces from projecting wall-plate ends to purlins. Central full-height double doors to front. Rear porch rising from aisle, with banded red and grey tile-hanging to sides, hipped plain-tile roof jettied forwards on straight braces, and full-height double doors. Lean-to to right gable end. Interior: shaped jowls to chamfered principal posts. Clasped purl in roof with diminishing principal rafters and almost straight windbraces (partly replaced in two right bays after fire.) Raked queen posts clasping purlin in aisle. Aisle partly partitioned from rest of barn by midrails between principal (or arcade) posts, with studs below and tension braces above. Similar framing to rest of barn. Threshing floor braces to ground cill each side of midstrey. Hoist hood a relatively unusual survival in this area.
