Description
YALDING BENOVER ROAD TQ 6949 (north-east side) 7/43 Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Congelow Cottages GV II
House, now cottages. Early C17, with later C17 or C18, and C20, alterations. Ground floor painted brick, first floor rendered. Plain tile roof. Main range of 5 timber-framed bays with (possibly slightly later) rear wing to left, of 2 timber-framed bays and stack bay. 2 storeys on brick plinth. Rendered roll-moulded corbel under eaves to right end. Half-hipped roof. Multiple red and grey brick ridge stack to wing, set towards junction with main range. Slender projecting rear brick stack towards right end of main range. Irregular fenestration of 4 casements; one single-light under eaves to left end, one two-light just above midrail, one two-light under eaves towards centre and another under eaves towards right end. Two two-light casements only to ground floor, set towards right end. Panelled door with two top lights and flat hood, up two steps towards centre. Rendered timber- framed two-storey rear return wing to left, eaves similar height to main range, ridge higher; roof hipped down to main range to front and gabled to rear. Long right side of wing has exposed first-floor post and stud, one two- light casement under stack, and one three-light towards gable end with boarded ground-floor door under. Rendered single-storey addition to rear gable of wing, with gabled plain-tile roof and gable end stack. Interior: only partly inspected. Exposed framing to right side of central bay and to two right end bays of main range. Right side of central bay has two chamfered axial beams on ground floor, straight rear doorhead opposite front door, and two other similar doorheads towards centre of right end wall, leading into front and rear right end rooms. Front and rear right end rooms each two bays long, with central cross beam. On first floor, these two bays apparently formed one large room with chamfered cross and axial beams. Exposed framing of relatively heavy scantling to rear wing. Gunstock-jowled posts to main range, cut jowls to rear wing. Clasped-purlin roof to main range with diminishing principal rafters, deep cambered collars, and curved windbraces. Staggered butt purlin roof to wing. Assorted rafters round stack. Edge-halved scarf joint to front wall-plate of main range. Formerly known as Forge Cottage.
