10/163 The Saxon Bower, No. 1A (D.M. Sayer & Co.) and No. 3 (E.E. Pilbeam) GV II
Shop row with first-floor accommodation. Early C15 with C16 alterations and mid/late C19 facade and roof. Timber-framed with part painted, part gault brick facade and slate roof. 2 formerly open bays of a wealden, in No. 1A and left half of No. 3 possibly with a further bay to right. 2 bays (The Saxon Bower) to left of open hall rebuilt in C16. 2 storeys and attics(eaves raised in C19). Roof continuous with Post Office to left but left gable of Saxon Bower tile-hung, visible internally. Small red brick stack in rear slope of roof to left end of No. 1A. Larger rendered stack in front slope of roof towards left end of No. 3. 3 plain irregularly-spaced dormers. Irregular fenestration of 4 glazing bar sashes and one canted bay on first floor. 4 C19 shop fronts (2 to No. 3) on ground floor. Half- glazed door within shop front to centre of Saxon Bower. Half- glazed door to right of No. 1A and to centre of No. 3, with flat hoods with triglyphed frieze and paired modillions. Further half-glazed door with semi-circular head, to centre of No. 3. Door to right end of No.3 with fielded panels and 2 top lights, frieze with triglyphs and paired modillions, and flat hood. Interior: Exposed timbers. Very steeply cambered tie-beam to central truss-of hall, ogee braces to partition, large fire- place with moulded jambs and bressumer. Interior partly inspected. Damaged by fire in 1930s.
