YALDING TO 74 NW Collier Street 4/83 The Duke of Wellington Inn II
House or farmhouse, now public house. C15, with late C16 or early C17 alterations and C19 or early C20 facade. Timber framed. Front elevation pebbledashed. Ground floor of left gable end brick, first floor tile-hung. Plain tile roof. Open hall of two probably unequal-length timber-framed bays andstoreyed right end bay. Left end bay and part of left hall bay rebuilt, probably in C18 or later. 2 storeys and attics, on rendered plinth. Steeply-pitched roof, half-hipped to left, hipped with gablet to right. Multiple red and grey brick ridge stack'to left of centre (in narrow left hall bay), and formerly-projecting buff brick stack to right gable end. Two small gabled dormers with two-light casements. Irregular fenestration of 3 recessed three-light casements. Segmental heads to ground-floor windows. Single-storey pebbledashed bay with hipped plain tile roof, spanning most of front elevation under and to right of stack, and containing two three-light leaded casements to front, and half-glazed door slightly to right of stack. Two-storey pebbledashed addition to right, slightly set back, with gabled plain-tile roof, lower ridge than main range, gable end stack, and one tall recessed twelve-pane sash. Rear lean-to to main range. Interior: exposed framing. Broad axial joists to right end bay, morticed for axial partition and with stair trimmer in rear right corner. Right end-of-hall beam formerly moulded and brattished, with soffit morticed for partition. Chamfered axial beam and broad C20 joists to inserted hall floor. Inglenook fireplace with brick back on stone base, and wooden bressumer. Gunstock jowls to principal posts to "centre" and right end of hall, and right gable end. Cambered chamfered central tie-beam with large chamfered arch braces almost meeting at centre. Roof not inspected but said to contain crown post.
