Description

YALDING GREEN LANE TQ 74 NW (south side) Collier Street 4/93 White Barn at Brow Farm GV II Barn, now house. Late C17, converted to house 1985-86. Timber framed, weatherboarded, with plain tile roof. 4 timber-framed bays, aisled to front, rear and ends, and facing west. 1½ storeys since conversion. Brick plinth (formerly stone to right). Steeply-pitched hipped roof. Weatherboarded C17 porch towards centre to second timber-framed bay from right, rising from aisle, with hipped plain tile roof jettied forwards without brackets. Front of porch glazed with four narrow vertical lights, two to each present floor. Irregular fenestration of 5 two-light casements; two to left of porch and three to right. Blocked doorway towards each end, indicated by vertical weatherboarding. Broad boarded door, also in pre-1985 position, to right of porch. Single-storey weatherboarded former addition to right, gabled to right end. Former byre, now forming single-storey rear wing to left; five bays, formerly open to yard with braced posts, now weatherboarded. Interior: exposed framing. Gunstock jowls to principal posts. Arch-braced arcade plates and tie-beams. Arcade plates cantilevered beyond right end truss, arch- braced from principal posts of that truss. Further, otherwise unsupported, tie-beam tenoned between right ends of arcade plates. Staggered butt purlin roof with collars but without queen struts. Re-used rafters from a lapped- collar roof. Face-halved arcade-plate scarf joint. Tie-beams of midstrey bay continue to form wall-plates of porch. Listing NGR: TQ7284045405
