Description

EAST SUTTON CHARTWAY STREET TQ 85 SW [south side) 2/67 The Blue House 26.4.68 II* House, now cottages. C15, with early C17 alterations. Timber framed, with rendered infilling and plain tile roof. Wealden, with open hall of 2 unequal-length bays, and storeyed right end bay. Left end rebuilt as separately framed 2-bay cross-wing. 2 storeys on stone plinth. Right and left end bays jettied, jetties returning on moulded dragon posts. Broadly-spaced studding to hall and to ground floor of end bays. First floor of each end bay rendered. Small arch brace to right end of flying wall plate. Solid bracket under central tie-beam and under left end post of hall. Roof hipped to left with gablet, and hipped towards right end down to lower ridge over right end bay. Small projecting stacks to right and left. Multiple brick ridge stack at junction of hall and left wing. Irregular fenestration of 5 leaded casements; one 3-light to left bay, one 2-light to left hall bay, two 2-light to broader right hall bay, and one 3-light to right end bay. Ribbed door to right end of hall. Interior: exposed framing. Moulded, brattished end of hall beam. Moulded crown post to hall. Side purlin roof to wing. Inserted hall floor dated 1610. Plank-and-muntin partition, probably early C17. Listing NGR: TQ8317850251
