Description

HEADCORN HIGH STREET TQ 8344 (South side) 10/75 Shakespeare House and path 26.4.68 between front door and High Street GV II House or special-purpose building (possibly a cloth hall), now house. Late C16 and C18, restored C20. Timber framed with rendered infilling. 3 timber-framed bays, built at right-angles to road. C18 timber-framed bay parallel to street to right. 2 tall storeys and garret. Right section of 2 lower storeys. C16 section close-studded, with deep moulded fascia board across midrail. Single central stud and straight brace to right section. Gable of C16 section rendered with plain bargeboards, high cambered collar with short solid-spandrel arch-braces, and curved ashlar-pieces. Brick stack in left slope of roof to central bay of C16. section. Slender stack to right end of right section. Irregular fenestration of leaded windows. C16 section has central first-floor 8-light mullioned and transomed window with deep cill, flanked by smaller 2-light windows with rounded heads. Similar windows to ground floor. 4-light mullioned window to attic. 3-light leaded casement to first floor of right section. Ribbed door with flat bracketted hood to left end of right section. Interior not inspected, but said to have unusual roof structure. Path of Bethersden marble slabs between front door and High Street. (Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. XXXI, 1915) Listing NGR: TQ8335144192
