Description

BOUGHTON MONCHELSEA WIERTON HILL TQ 75 SE (East side) 1/64 Wierton Grange II House. 1896, after the style of R. Norman Shaw. Ground floor red brick in English bond, first floor hung with fishscale tiles. Occasional stone dressings to ground floor and chimney stacks. Plain tile roof. L-plan; north-facing main range with wing running north from east end. 2 storeys and attics. South (garden) front: steeply-pitched gabled roof. Slightly projecting gable end stacks and central brick ridge stack. Cupolaed look-out to west of centre. 5 dormers with alternating segmental and triangular pediments, and leaded cross windows. 2 symmetrically-placed 2-storey flat-roofed canted bays with moulded wooden cornices and leaded wooden mullioned and transomed windows. Leaded 12- light wooden mullioned and transomed window between them to centre. Ground- floor recessed to centre behind 2 engaged and one central column. Half-glazed door within recess. North (entrance) front: broad porch between centre and west end, with ashlared ground floor, tile-hung first floor, and paired Doric columns flanking recess containing front door. 2 tall narrow windows lighting hall to east of porch. Wing: in same materials as main range, with 2 broad tile-hung eaves dormers, and rainwater-head dated 1896. Interior: not inspected, but said to contain galleried 2-storey hall and fine joinery.
