Building record TQ 67 SW 1474 - Wharf walls, Grove road
Summary
The wharf which runs from E of the slipway round to the western side of Robins Creek probably dates in large part from the mid-C19 development of the cement works (apart from the W side of the creek which is undeveloped on the 1864 OS map but appears to be shown on the 1998 map). The walls are built of brick but have been faced with square concrete panels. Evidence from aerial photographs suggest these date from the late-1930s and their
similarity to the pressed-steel ‘Braithwaite’ panels used for water tanks suggests that they are in fact probably steel panels later sprayed with concrete. The panels have vertical steel supports set into a concrete plinth. Some railway tracks and a steel crane base survive behind the walls just to the N of the slipway
