Full Description
During observations made by Archaeology South East for shoring the deep navigation cut being built to link the Wellington Dock section of Dover Harbour to the existing outer harbour, a North-South timber structure was revealed. This structure comprised oak piles mostly made by quartering minimally trimmed oak logs, the tips were neatly axe hewn to shape and they were 1.5-2.2m long. The top of this close set line of piles was very level and probably original, though they had been heavily eroded. On the seaward eastern face of the piles a single course of a waling beam was revealed, this was of large box halved oak sections fastened with substantial oak treenails. These beams had redundant oak treenails in at odd angles indicating a previous use in either large ships or previous harbour works. (summarised from source) (1)
